A Discovery Of Witches TV Review

Season One Review

I’ve read articles and posts calling this show the new age Twilight, so I had to check it out! And sure, I can definitely see where that conclusion can be drawn – forbidden love aspect. Though, let me say, main characters Diana Bishop, is far from a Bella, and Matthew de Clairmont, is far from an Edward. I’d compare them more to Buffy and Angel.

Based off of the Deborah Harkness‘ book of the same name, A Discovery of Witches is a hidden gem. A truly spectacular show!

Diana Bishop (played by the beautiful Teresa Palmer) is our heroine and the main character of the show. Matthew de Clairmont (played by Matthew Goode) is the second main character, Diana’s heroic love interest, a very strong, and old, vampire, who will do anything to protect Diana. Okay, sounds like Twilight, though seriously, Diana is a BADASS all on her own!! Trust me!

Diana is a powerful witch, yet she has forsaken her magical side, believing that magic isn’t good and things can be done the human way. She’s also very smart. She’s a Yale college Professor of History – being a historian with a vast knowledge of alchemy and science. Her parents were murdered when she was young, and she was left in the care of her aunts, Sarah Bishop, and Sarah’s partner, Emily Mather. They’re both powerful witches as well. Actually, the Bishops (Diana’s mom side) are descendants of Bridget Bishop, the very first witch killed in the Salem Witch trials. So yeah, it’s safe to say that the Bishops are very magically adept.

The series starts off with Diana checking books out at the Bodleian Library. She checks out a certain book, Ashmole 782, which she quickly realizes is an enchanted manuscript. Once Diana touches it, the book literally brands her with a rose tattoo, and BOOM, it sets off a magical wave that supernatural creatures everywhere can feel. This manuscript is the secret to all supernatural species. So you can see why everyone is alerted and wants it. Diana puts the manuscript back, but that doesn’t stop everyone from coming after her, especially since Diana is the ONLY one who can obtain the magical manuscript.

You see what I mean? Just look at the last picture. Who wouldn’t be terrified when you have an old, vampire creeper looking at you like that.

This puts Diana in the path of her future soulmate Matthew, a vampire geneticist, and Professor of Biochemistry. Matthew instantly feels the magic that the manuscript releases. He finds out that it came from Diana, and tells Diana that she needs to watch her back, as the supernatural world will be coming for her. Matthew originally wants it for himself, because it contains information on the creation of vampires. Yet, once he meets Diana, he feels a connection with her that he hasn’t felt for anyone in centuries. It’s love, you guys!

Matthew and Diana quickly fall for each other. This leads them into being targets for the Congregation. The Congregation was formed to keep the supernatural world in line, consisting of witches, vampires and daemons.

Now, if you’re like me, you’re asking yourself what are daemons? Not much are known about them, except that they’re very creative and smart. Their power lies in their minds, as their ideas are ingenious. Besides that, they’re not immortal like vampires. Their lifespans are like humans. They’re also pretty friendly, becoming allies of Diana and Matthew. The Congregation isn’t having any of Diana’s and Matthews forbidden love, though, so they instantly go after the couple. Not to mention they want the Ashmole 782 manuscript – mostly the vampires and witches, the daemons have their own agenda.

Witches and vampires come after Diana, yet she unleashes magic that hasn’t been seen in centuries. A testament to her powers!

Look how badass she looks. Go Diana! I’ve watched a lot of supernatural shows, and this is the FIRST time I’ve seen a witch do this to a vampire!

Later down the line, we find out why Diana’s parents were murdered..and it has a lot to do with power, and Diana. They were murdered by fellow witches, by the way. This show is very good with twists and mysteries!

Towards the end of the season, Diana and Matthew are up to their necks in trouble, and this leads Diana to embrace her magical side fully, and since no other witches in her time has the power she has, she decides to travel back in time to train. This is a very rare power. Diana gets this power from her father. You see, Diana comes from two rare, powerful witch lineages, so that’s why she’s so powerful.

A Discovery of Witches is a very history informative, creative and fun show! The magical scenes are spectacular and magnificent. There’s headless witches being kept prisoner by vampires. So yeah, also pretty dark. The romantic scenes between Matthew and Diana are beautiful. Seriously, two romantic characters that can take care of themselves, if needed, is a wonderful element to see on TV! Diana is a force to be reckon with, and Matthew is the strength behind the pair!

A Discovery of Witches TV series is produced by Bad Wolf and Sky Productions and comes on UK’s channel, Sky One. Being in the US, I’m thankful that AMC decided to air the show! That’s how I watched it. It’s been picked up for a second season, though there isn’t a release date for it yet! I highly recommend that everyone checks out this show!!

If you love witches, magic, vampires, dAemons, and magical battles, this show is right up your alley. It’s informative, creative, and the scenery is breathtaking – you won’t be disappointed, trust me!
